In many rivers around the world, groundwater conditions have a major influence on the flow regime and water quality. Hence, groundwater plays a key role in controlling ecological processes and functioning in rivers, riparian zones and floodplains. As such, it can sustain multiple ecosystems services within river valleys. Deterioration of groundwater bodies, resulting from land use, abstraction or climate change, can significantly alter river flow and quality characteristics that can cause ecological degradation. Therefore, maintaining groundwater-river connectivity is an important aspect of ecosystem conservation and water management policy in river valleys.

Within the framework of REFORM a three-day expert workshop is being organised in Poland to establish an overview of the current knowledge on the topic of groundwater - river feedbacks. In addition, we aim to identify and provide a focus for future research activities and water management policies on this topic during the workshop.

The workshop topics will be:
- Role and relevance of groundwater in environmental flows;
- Riparian and groundwater-fed wetlands – importance of base flow, flow dynamics & water quality;
- Plant ecology of aquatic and riparian zones;
- Groundwater river feedback at different scales;
- Vulnerability and resilience of groundwater-river processes (including effect of drought)
- Current and required policy on groundwater-river feedbacks (WFD)

2nd REFORM National Stakeholder Workshop - River Restoration: Experiences and Methodological Advances

As part of the series of national stakeholder worshops taing place under REFORM, UPM (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid) is leading the organisation of a session in Sevilla, Spain. The general aim of the workshop is to raise awareness and interest of water managers and stakeholders on the REFORM Project and its results. Local academics and River Basin Authorities will engage with international scientists to discuss about the advances in knowledge on hydro-morphological and ecological processes and elicit links to the current needs and applied approaches in the vicinity of Seville.

The workshop topics will be:
- Spanish River Restoration Practices
- Restoration constrains in Mediterranean Rivers
- Stakeholder preferences and decision support for river rehabilitation
- Benchmarking and targets for river restoration
- Multi-scale framework for river characterization and restoration
- Sediment flux and river responses in semiarid rivers
- River Restoration Practices: European experiences

The 14th International Symposium on Aquatic Plants has been announced to take place at the Playfair Library in Old College, Edinburgh between 14-18th September 2015. Registration and abstract submission is open here.

Organised by MARS colleagues at the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology in Edinburgh, the conference aims to: “promote debate on all issues relating to the science and management of aquatic vegetation. Interest in aquatic plants has been growing and diversifying and to reflect this there will be a wide Scientific Programme which will appeal to scientists and managers.”

The conference programme will include sessions on Ecotoxicology, Trophic Interactions in Macrophyte Beds, The Future of Invasive Species Management, Community Responses to Environmental Change in Space and Time, Aquatic Plants and Physical Processes, Restoration, Aquatic Plant Monitoring, Ecological Stoichiometry and Nutrient Cycling, Vegetation & Dams, and Fundamental Science.

Delegates will also be offered the opportunity to take part in a conference dinner and ceilidh at Surgeon’s Hall, and to attend a field excursion to Loch Leven to see an excellent example of successful lake restoration.

Within the framework of REFORM a thematic workshop on “Linking E-Flows to Sediment Dynamics” is organized in Rome in September 2015. A recent European Commission guidance on environmental flows (e-flows) identifies a series of overall key indications to tackle some critical aspects linked to the management and restoration of water bodies affected by hydrological pressures in order to reach the environmental objectives of the European Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC (WFD). Considering sediment dynamics and river morphology with hydrology and hydraulics in order to determine e-flows is one of these key indications and it is the topic of this thematic workshop. A panel of international experts, from relevant agencies and academia, will investigate how to identify a common approach to specify efficient e-flow based measures that consider river sediment dynamics and morphological evolution, in order to supplement the EU guidance on e-flows. The discussion will be drawn on the newly developed REFORM multi-scalar and process-oriented framework, since it is ideally suited for tackling hydrology-sediment relationships. The outcomes of the discussion will be the topics of an ad-hoc comprehensive policy discussion.

The WWR3-2015, 3^rd International Conference Wood in World Rivers aims to analyze the importance of wood of all sizes, both living and dead, and the riparian forests which produce wood, a crucial element for geomorphology, ecology and management of rivers.

The main objectives of the conference are to:
- synthesize the knowledge on the physical dynamics and ecological interactions of wood in streams and rivers in different geographical regions;
- create a framework for interpreting and applying research results and management systems;
- assess physical and biological responses of large wood in stream restoration;
- explore links between physical and ecological dynamics of large wood, resource management systems and the communities and cultures in which they are applied.

The international conference IS.Rivers focuses on the sustainable management of the world’s rivers, especially European ones. The IS.Rivers conference concentrates on the state of art management strategies and lessons learned from individual case studies. Particular consideration is given to the integration of physical, ecological and social perspectives of the different stakeholders involved in river management (governance, economy, culture), which is reflected in the title of the conference (“Integrative Sciences for rivers”).

The conference has two objectives:
- To identify and discuss the most recent scientific advances on the complexity and diversity of rivers, in terms of their functioning, uses, stakeholder involvement and management strategies ;
- To share experiences of research and actions, implementation of local policies and strategies at different scales with various human and geographic contexts: hydrographic districts, corridors, main cities, transition zones and estuaries.

Specificities
- A conference focusing on rivers
- A conference in which all facets of the rivers may be submitted
- A conference with multidisciplinary research occuring in interaction with management
- A conference highlighting innovative actions carried out at different scales (corridors, cities, interface areas and estuaries)
- A conference with simultaneous translation French-English (vice-versa) to promote a real exchange between delegates, and access to knowledge of research, actions and experiments conducted on French rivers.

The First European and North American Cooperation on Fish Passage Conferences

Fish Passage 2015 will be an important international forum to exchange findings and experiences on fish related passage issues. This international conference is of interest to researchers, educators, practitioners, funders, and regulators who have an interest in advancements in technical fishways, nature-like fishways, downstream passage solutions, stream restoration and stabilization, dam removal, road ecology, and the myriad of funding, safety, climate change, and other social issues surrounding watershed connectivity projects.

This is a three-day conference with concurrent sessions in engineering, ecohydraulics, biology, and management and social issues. The conference will also feature plenary talks, professional networking opportunities, special thematic sessions, and a poster session. Independently offered short courses and workshops will be available immediately before the conference. In addition, tours will be offered on Thursday, June 25, 2015.

The main goal is to share fish passage and river connectivity best practices with international colleagues and to attract worldwide experts. Within Europe this conference is seen as an evaluation and learning point for the river connectivity goals of the European Water Framework Directive, where 2015 is one of the deadlines for measures within European river basin plans.
